Artist Statement:
I’ve been making art for a number of years now, and I seek to impact and better society through my works. I want to show people a new perspective on things they already know, reveal subjects and concepts they don’t see, and provide them with a medium through which they can process their own emotions.
A main goal I have for my artwork is to show people a new perspective on subjects and sites that they may encounter often, such as an architectural work or a form of portraiture. Acknowledging that everyone has their own viewpoint can be a pathway to understanding people who are different from you and building empathy between groups and individuals. By showing people my particular angles and viewpoints of the world around me, I hope to communicate an overall theme of accepting other ideas of beauty and appreciating individuality.
Although showing people new points of view on “average” things is important to me, I also want to show people things that they don’t already see, or choose to avoid. Whether I am trying to show unseen mental disorders, ethnic minorities, or the LGBTQ+ community, I want to showcase disenfranchised people and misunderstood concepts. I am trying to bring topics I find important to the light and empower those who may have trouble finding power in today’s mass beauty standards. I believe now it is more important than ever to speak to society about these issues.
Much can be learned about humanity by how we interact with our environment. The contrast between the clean lines of our architectural triumphs, the clutter of interior spaces and the way we move among them tells stories about our disconnection and loneliness amid such creations. By studying and photographing these disconnections and interactions, I seek to show others the stark beauty that I find in unorthodox perspectives. Our society’s over-reliance on posed, smiling, carefully curated self-portraits and photos makes the challenge of bringing the person’s true nature to light an even more important undertaking.
